Gun Control Essays (436 words) - Gun Politics, Firearms, Gun Control

Gun Control Guns don't kill people; people kill people is more true than gun control advocates admit. Look at the number of murders committed each year without guns. Stabbing deaths occur as often as gun deaths in this area and elsewhere. Would those who favor gun control also call for knife control? Do you think persons intent on murder are not imaginative enough to kill without guns or knives? I recall the 1982 murder of a woman with a sledgehammer by her estranged husband at a nearby shopping center. Watch how quickly the art of poisoning returns should other weapons be outlawed. Prejudice Against Guns Face it: People who want government enforced gun control are prejudiced against guns and gun owners. Having already made up their minds that guns are inherently evil, they reject facts to the contrary. They forget that ordinary citizens own guns primarily for hunting, target shooting, and as collectibles, as well as for self-defense. Worse than being prejudiced, those wanting laws to control gun ownership are dangerous! For the doubtful possibility of saving some innocent lives, they would deny ordinary citizens their right to keep and bear arms. These are the same people who would use the force of government to deny you other human rights as well, which do not fit their ideas about society. That is anti-liberal! Guns for Self-Defense When it comes to self-defense, guns are important to some people, especially women, the poor, and the elderly. Consider how many rapes, muggings, and burglaries are prevented by a potential victim flashing a gun. Even so-called Saturday night specials will frighten criminals away. In fact, these cheap guns are the choice of poor people, who are most likely to be victimized and least able to afford expensive guns for self-defense. The show of any gun can be a deterrent to crime. A recent attempted robbery in a nearby town was foiled when the victim stabbed and shot one of his assailants, scaring off the other two. We can only guess what would have happened to the victim if defense with weapons were not possible--but he would have been robbed for certain. A Protection from Government Those lobbying for laws to control guns assume the government police will always be benign. There are many formerly free countries that are now dictatorships where citizens made that mistake. Just imagine what government officials would do with records of gun ownership if our government became totalitarian. Not all that many years ago, a gun might have been the only thing that saved some blacks in this country. Even government police posed a danger to you if you were black and became uppity. How easy it is for those who would have the government control guns to forget!

Dialogue About the Problem of Overpopulation Essays

Dialogue About the Problem of Overpopulation Essays Dialogue About the Problem of Overpopulation Paper Dialogue About the Problem of Overpopulation Paper Martin: Well, Marina, yes, basically do think overpopulation is a serious problem, maybe not in Macedonia, but in some other countries in the world, like China, it is one of the major state issues. Vive read that there are laws which limit the number of kids for one family to have. And what is your opinion? Marina: I disagree. I dont think overpopulation is such a serious issue, as long as there is a solution for it. And I dont think that kind of laws should be allowed, one reason is that they are not humane. Maybe they should have come up with some other idea how to get over it. Martin: Youre right about this. Im thinking about a world without borders, so anyone can live where he wants, and then, the issue of overpopulation will be dialed with. There wont be limitations where people can live, so I believe there wont be overcrowded cities, or Marina: I believe it will be Thats the real reason why there is overpopulation. Everyone wants to live in the big cities, so they would finitely become overcrowded. Maybe, the government should promote the rural communities, with giving benefits, such as low-price houses, available jobs with good salary.. Martin: Well that is a good idea. That way many people will take the chance, and move to the countryside, and with that lower the overpopulation in the industrial cities. Plus, they can enjoy the unpolluted air and earth. Marina: Finally, we came to mutual understanding how to get rid of this problem. Now we just have to recommend this option to the authorities.

Critical article about LEADERSHIP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Critical article about LEADERSHIP - Essay Example The first part of the debate is whether leaders are born innately or if leaders are developed. Some theories point out that some people might be born with the innate ability to command and influence others. This describes what has become known as the Trait theory. With a biological basis, it states that people possess certain traits. Some of these traits in which we are born with make us more suitable leaders than others (Day p262-265). Thus, those with the correct combination of traits will become leaders in society. Also, the Great Man theory states that great leaders will be born when there is a need for them. Others point out that as we develop as humans, our natural leadership abilities require training and fostering. This is the Behavioral theory and it talks specifically how leadership is a learned process rather than an acquired trait. Since leadership can be taught, this allows the person to develop traits that he/she deems will be important in the course of leadership devel opment (Griffin & Moorhead p311-312). It is a combination of both. Rather than have just one theory explain the entire aspect, it is acceptable to take in the fact that either one could be used to describe how leadership skills are created. One of the important concepts to address regarding leadership theory is to evaluate the skills that are essential for leadership. The first and utmost important skill is in communication. Communication skills are necessary for the leader to communicate his/her ideas to his/her subordinates. This is essential if the leader and the followers are going to function together in a cohesive manner. The second important skill of leadership is the power of delegation. As a leader, it is sometimes impossible to cover goals and challenges by yourself. Teamwork and delegation are needed to solve this. Delegation involves a leader giving up some of his/her power or influence in order to ensure that multiple tasks get done. The final essential skill of leaders hip is cultural competency. In the globalized economy, leaders are constantly facing encounters with people of different races, cultures, ideals, etc. As a leader, it might be necessary to work with someone who does not share the same values as you. As a result, you need to learn to have acceptance as well as understanding which are the foundation and underlying themes of cultural competency. The first main theory is that of transactional leadership. Transactional leadership is often seen in the educational and economical context. It relies on the exchange of both punishments and reinforcements in order to attain goals (Chamorro-Premuzic, Tomas p155). In psychology, punishments are meant to decrease a behavior. Positive punishment is when you increase a negative stimulus in order to decrease a certain type of behavior. Negative punishment is when you decrease a stimulus in order to cause a decrease of a certain type of behavior. For example, if an employee is late the manager can ch oose to decrease his salary in an attempt to decrease his tardiness. Reinforcements are meant to increase a behavior which a person has deemed valuable. Positive reinforcement is increasing a stimulus in order to cause an increase in desired behavior. In the educational setting, a professor will give a student who deserves a good grade an â€Å"A† and hopefully this will encourage the increased academic effort put forth by the student.

Classical Hollywood Cinema Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Classical Hollywood Cinema - Essay Example This style of filmmaking is based on an invisible style, where the camera and sound recording merge as one with the action taking place on the screen. Classical Hollywood Cinema was formulaic in nature and most movies made were musicals, cartoons, slapstick comedy, Westerns, epics or the biopic. In 1927, with the release of the movie ‘The Jazz Singer’ sound was introduced to the moving picture. The movie was made by Warner Brothers, one of the big five studios of the time, the other four being Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Loews (MGM) and RKO (Radio-Keith-Orpheum). These studios controlled filmmaking, from its creative to its financial and to its distributive process, which led to the creation of the classical film style. Movies were, â€Å"over determined,† a film jargon used to refer to the social, cultural and economic factors which determine the final product, and it was also derogatorily compared to Ford’s assembly line. The studio system solidified into a mammoth business undertaking prompted by the introduction of sound in films and the idea of vertical integration in its operations. The studio system could be compared to a factory and as such the products coming out of it had a standard look and feel and it is this which led to the many genres in addition to the identification of studios with particular features. MGM had a list of stars on its roster and thus created all-star productions like ‘Grand Hotel’ (1932). Warner Brothers indulged in social realism while Paramount created rib tickling comedies and 20th Century Fox created very great musicals and biopics. The studio system became what has been called â€Å"the genius of the system’, the title of Thomas Shatz’s study of this unique industry, a phrase borrowed from Andre Bazin, a critic and theorist who called â€Å"American cinema †¦ a classical art,

Operations Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Operations Management - Research Paper Example However, the bigger part of the research regarding Japanese management practices has emphasized on practices in Japan and the system in which these were diverged from practice of American firms. Moreover, the essential significance of HRM practices for the success of Japanese organizations has been discussed widely. Specifically, generating fortified employee cohesiveness, company commitment, and life time employment attended significant considerations. Furthermore, seniority-based pay systems along with extensive job rotation in different functions and slow promotion have been extensively discussed. Many facts revealed about Japanese HRM practices; however, very small number of them testified on their practicality, on the other hand a large part of our information is based on assumptions and past stories. There are eight rules which must be followed in practice of HRM. These eight rules are come into existence after practice and classification. These are fairness, frame of reference , scope, formality, time horizon, participation, individualism and explicitness. These eight aspects of HRM are being applied in all the countries of the world (Bird and Beechler, 1995). The model of lifetime employment has not been successful in all Japanese organizations. Definitely some practices were limited to only to established Japanese organizations. Long-term employment and seniority-based pay was only applicable to the limited numbers of workers in several organizations. Furthermore, their success was dependent on different dimensions. For instance, the requirement of organizational enhancement made possible the hiring of several young and comparatively cheap working forces and thus minimizes the expenses. Moreover, it also helped the companies to encourage the workers by developing fresh positions regarding promotions. Comparatively, the growth of the organizations was not probable without enhancing the efficiency of workers. Clearly, these skills were significant for the rising innovations that made able the firms of Japan to outclass their other counterparts of the world. However, these changes were not appropriate regarding knowledge-intensive and rapidly changing technologies. In the current economy, specific knowledge or fresh concepts, which are not related to the measurement of in-house training, are the initial motivators of the reasonable power of organizations. Thus, the aspects of long-term skill development were obstacles to a rapid and adjustable response to fresh chances. Furthermore Japanese companies have a larger scope, and their focal point is a broader set of targets and achievements. For instance, the bonuses of Japanese employees are attached to the wider performance of the firms as well as the employees have the advantage to take a large portion of bonuses to take home. This practice has also been observed in job rotation and training activities and this is the place where the emphasis is on the development of generalists not o n the specialists. Japanese firms are known for their search of excellence instead of equity. For instance, these firms reward the employees regularly. Moreover the pay is based on seniority basis and not on individual performance. This exhibits that these companies have been working to develop the society. It has been revealed that the

Economic Growth :: Economy Economics Governmental Essays

Economic growth is the most important study in economics today. The first book on economics was by Adam Smith The Wealth of Nations the full title was the Inquire Into The Nature And Sources Of The Wealth Of Nations. â€Å"Economic growth determines a countries future, and economic growth in the past determines a countries present as far as it’s material values are concerned.† (Buechner Recording) So every material value of the modern world is a result economic growth in the past, or your standard of living is the result of economic growth in the past. Economic growth in the future will determine whether or not there is rising or falling economic wealth, and coordinated with that whether or not the standard of living in the future continues to rise or fall. For example: In 1870 England was the leading industrial power of the globe, and as a consequence it also was the leading political power of the globe. According to M. Northrup Buechner the real wage rate in England is estimated to have been about 50% higher than the real wage rate in other European countries at that time. (Recording) It was about 1870 because of the rise of statist policies and ideologies that rate of growth in England started to lag behind that of the other European Countries. It didn’t lag a lot Buechner states the statistical estimate was less than one percent a year, however for a period of 10 or 20 years that’ll make a difference hardly anybody would notice. Yes maybe so, but if you compound that interest rate over 100 years what you get is what you see today. England is essentially a third rate economic power, and the real wage rate in England today is estimated to be â€Å"about 33% less than the real wage rate in other European countries.à ¢â‚¬ (Buechner Recording) In 1870 the United States in 1870 was an economically backward, internationally insignificant, and unimportant country in the world with respect to matters regarding foreign affairs. According to Buechner it was about 1870 when the United States embarked on a growth rate of over 5% percent a year, which was sustained for a period of over 40 years. (Recording) No country in the history of the world matched that record. At the end of that period about the time of World War I the United States took Britain’s place as the leading industrial power of the globe.
